Eugene Celebration
Cycling Classic sponsored by Trek/VW
Eugene, Oregon
SEPTEMBER 20-21
Produced by Downtown Events Management, Inc
Racing returns
to downtown Eugene for the 2003 Eugene Celebration Cycling Classic
Since its inception more than twenty years ago, the Eugene Celebration Cycling
Classic has grown to be one of the most exciting events of the year- one that,
in years past, has drawn racers from all across the Northwest. Since current
Race Director Jim Anderson took over in 1999, the race has steadily increased
its levels of participation. In 1999, it drew 200 racers; just one year later,
that number had grown to over 320, making the Eugene Celebration Cycling Classic
the second biggest race in Oregon for 2000, behind only the Tour of Willamette,
a National Racing Calendar event. While a majority of the racers came from Oregon,
there was also a sizeable contingent from Washington, Canada, California, and
elsewhere in the Northwest. As a result, the race was a huge success, and inspired
the organizers to make it even bigger: in 2002, a stage was run in downtown
Eugene for the first time in years, attracting record crowds and raising public
awareness of the event to all-time highs.
Taking place on September 20-21, the 2003 Eugene Celebration Cycling
Classic will feature a newly-added road race, as well as a new time
trial course in the southwest Eugene area, and the ever-popular downtown circuit
race. The road race will be challenging, with a mix of hills, rolling terrain
and flats that will make it a test of each rider’s overall skills. The
circuit race in downtown Eugene, which has been a part of the Eugene Celebration
Cycling Classic since its earliest days, is around the west side of Skinner’s
Butte Park and will make for a classic finale to one of the Northwest’s
best cycling events. Along with fast and exciting road racing, there will be
a non-competitive bike race for kids of all ages and abilities. So get ready
for some great racing at this September, a perfect way to end the bike race
season at a challenging race and a big downtown celebration!
