OBRA

It was just dry enough to finish the junior races and half the masters and
women's schedule.  The first night of the year saw some quick junior action
with many new riders trying out the track for the first time in race
situations.  Newcomers Kaitlyn Reay, and Stephen Fox were able to break
through the crowd and take the omnium wins in the younger Junior women and
men categories.  With the Handicap style races helping to even things out a
little bit, Ellie Bossen, Kenny Bossen and Ricky ... yes ... Bossen (how
many Bossens were at the track?) were able to score wins in the individual
races along with Kaitlyn and Stephen.  Look for these riders to continue to
do well as the season progresses, and don't forget to watch for the very
young Chilenski brothers Jacob and Madison or Josh Woolcock as they start
moving up in the standings with the experience they are getting in these
early season races.

To help transition into the old guy and gal races elite juniors Dean Tracy
and Mikkel Bossen put on a great match sprint ride with Dean holding Mikkel
up high on the track until he attacked with 200 meters to go to take the
win.  I'll be watching for Mikkel to attempt some revenge later in the year.
It is my hope that we can lure the elite juniors to the Friday night races
at least once a month to help show the younger kids how fast they will soon
be.

That left the novice women and Masters to have the track with the women up
first, including the first lady of Oregon racing, Candi Murray.  The women
put on a great show with Mary Ross and Shirley Clark dueling to a tie with a
win a piece by nights end, although their last race was cut short by rain.
The Novice Masters races saw great teamwork by the NW Velo riders (Mark
Magilner and Tom Powers) as they continually worked for each other on route
to a 1st and 2nd place finish in the first Race.  Patrick Hartigan of Team O
was able to break it up a bit in the 2nd race with a win for himself, but
that still left Mark in first for the night.  Both the Masters A and B races
were cut short to only one race a piece, and those went to Ron Magnus who
used patience during the progressive points race to get the win in the Bs,
and a very speedy Mark Ginsberg who returned to action after some time off
with a win the As race.
